2011 TRIM Notice On-Line Extra

Notice of Proposed Property Taxes
Mailed to Property Owners on Aug 19th!

It's August, and as we do at this time each year, we mail Proposed Notices of Property Taxes to all Marion County Property Owners. The notice, commonly, called the TRIM, an acronym for Truth In Millage, is meant to provide a clear and complete picture of property taxes.

This Notice is not a bill, it serves as an estimate of what your November tax notice will most likely reflect. Please review this Notice carefully; important information regarding property taxes, budget hearings, and current estimated values are provided.

If your concern remains unresolved after meeting with the property appraiser’s staff, you may file a petition for a hearing with the Value Adjustment Board (VAB). The deadline for filing a petition regarding your property value is 25 days after the mailing (Tuesday, September 13, 2011) of the TRIM notice.

Value Adjustment Board (VAB)

The VAB is created by State law and is comprised of two members of the Marion County Commission, one member of the School Board, and two appointed citizen members. The Board appoints Special Magistrates, who are qualified real estate appraisers or attorneys, to conduct the informal hearings and rule on the assessment, exemption, or agricultural classification.

The VAB does not set millage rates and has no jurisdiction over taxes. The Special Magistrate can only address issues concerning values, exemptions, classifications, and portability. The magistrates are independent of the Property Appraiser’s Office.
